Elections
The Board of Directors consists of five directors serving 4-year terms on a staggering schedule. 2-year terms may be present on the ballot when a position is vacated between election cycles. Polling place elections are held in May in odd numbered years.
Next election date: May 6, 2025
The Genesee Water and Sanitation District is a “special district” in accordance with Colorado’s “Special District Act” known as Title 32, Article 1. Special districts are a type of local government and include fire protection districts, sanitation districts, and park and recreation districts, among others. There are 2,917 special districts in the state, and the Genesee Water and Sanitation District is one of 120 water and sanitation districts in Colorado, according to the state’s Department of Local Affairs.
Operating as a local government, the Genesee Water and Sanitation District is subject to the state’s strict electoral guidelines protecting fair elections (C.R.S. § 32-1). A GWSD staff member supervises election duties as GWSD’s designated election official.
Once the new directors take their oaths, the Board elects the officers. A chairman, treasurer and secretary are required, although the secretary and treasurer may be the same director, according to state law. Other titles may include Vice President and Assistant Secretary.
